Green Key

The Green Key international eco-label represents the idea of sustainable tourism and is designated for tourist companies. This label acknowledges the environmentally friendly practices of accommodation providers and advocates for sustainable management principles. By earning the Green Key, an accommodation company can demonstrate that combining quality, comfort, and eco-friendly operations leads to superior outcomes for both guests and the environment. Launched in Denmark in 1994, the Green Key now boasts over 5,000 participating tourism companies in more than 60 countries. The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) coordinates the label internationally, while in Estonia, the EAS Tourism Development Center oversees its implementation.

One of the several requirements to be monitored for the Green Key is the cleaning requirements. The company with the Green Key eco-label has the choice of cleaning agents.
Mandatory Requirements:
1. 90% of all daily chemical cleaning products have an internationally or nationally recognized eco-label. See Products with the ESTKO eco-label here.
2. Chemical disinfectants (biocides) are approved by national authorities. AS ESTKO’s biocides have either a permit issued in accordance with the Biocides Regulation or a registration certificate issued in accordance with the Biocides Act.

Recommended Practices:
1. The company uses eco-labeled dishwashing detergents.
2. Daily cleaning uses concentrated chemical cleaning agents and they are diluted on site.
3. At least 75% of soap, shower gel and shampoo are eco-labeled.
4. The washing and cleaning agents used do not contain fragrances.
